"When the rains came" - the destructive force of nature

In light of heavy rainfall in Summer 2019, the building materials for the Amina Zwindila Foundation School in Jos, Nigeria were badly damaged and comprehensive renovation was required.

Year in, year out, Nigeria is struck by heavy rainfall which not only cause untold damage to infrastructure but also result in great loss of human life.  The rains that came at the end of July 2019 nearly destroyed parts of Nigeria completely.  Several airports were flooded, causing the cancellations of hundreds of flights, which prevented the delivery of urgent relief supplies.

The Amina Zwindila Foundation School in Jos was particularly badly affected by rainfall. The school was flooded for several days and cut off from the electricity grid.  It was a mercy that the pupils were not on the premises at the time, fortunately it was the middle of the school holidays.  After the waters had receded, the full extent of the damage became clear – in particular, the walls and floors but also the doors and fences suffered the water's destructive effects.  It would have been impossible to continue to run lessons as it would only have put both pupils and teachers at unnecessary risk.

The Child & Family Foundation swooped in at this time of great need and got all the relevant procedures underway so that the badly-needed repairs and renovations could take place as soon as possible.  After hours of hard graft, the Amina Zwindila Foundation School looked as good as new.  The team managed all the work themselves and restored the walls, floors, doors and fences to their former glory.  When the pupils stormed back into the classrooms on 9th September, they were amazed to see their lovely school restored to the inviting place that it is and full of the promise of knowledge.
