Education in the midst of nature - a project between wealth and poverty

This region is not only home to crystal clear beaches and luxurious hotels, but unfortunately also has one of the highest percentages of poverty in Mexico. 35% of Quintana Roo's inhabitants (1.5 million in 2015) are poor and 7% are extremely poor.

When you see Cancun or Playa del Carmen on Instagram photos or in advertisements, the first thing that comes to mind are the beautiful beaches and luxurious hotels.

These Caribbean cities are visited by millions of tourists from all over the world throughout the year. The "Riviera Maya" is located on the east coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, in the state of Quintana Roo and near the Gulf of Mexico. The area extends for about 150 kilometers from Cancun to Playa del Carmen and includes the island of Cozumel. The entire area is a world-renowned luxury hotel zone.

Since the systematic development of the hotel zone in Cancun in the 1970s, the Riviera Maya has grown steadily until today. In the 1990s, the former fishing village of Playa del Carmen began to boom, and more recently Tulum has followed a similar trend. There are now several hundred tourist hotels of all categories, sizes and chains in the region. However, this region not only has crystal clear beaches and luxurious hotels, but unfortunately also one of the highest percentages of poverty in Mexico. 35% of the inhabitants of Quintana Roo (1.5 million in 2015) are poor and 7% are extremely poor.

Education is one of the most effective means against poverty. Therefore, the educational project "Kookay - Early Childhood Education in the Jungle" is based on three main pillars: Education, social welfare and environmental protection. In addition to the usual educational programs, Kookay also provides assistance to the poorest children in the region (Playa del Carmen), as well as numerous initiatives and projects to protect nature and the environment.
