Read and learn for a better life

At the Angel for a Day event in Hungary, the children were thrilled to receive new books to read

The pupils from two Hungarian schools were overjoyed to receive book donations and other gifts during the course of the "Angel for a Day" campaign on 30th May 2019.  The main objective was to get the children interested in reading and learning and to demonstrate how this can help them to escape from their current living conditions.

A good education is essential for the future of children, but there often isn't enough money to support disadvantaged pupils.   In 2019, two Hungarian educational institutions started to collaborate and set themselves a goal to support pupils from socially disadvantaged family backgrounds.

More than 150 pupils are taught at the Ujszliováki általános iskola and 55 per cent of these children come from poor backgrounds, where the parents themselves have often never received an education.  The school's aim is to offer these pupils access to a higher standard of education and to convey their knowledge to them using songs, games and poetry.

The Hernádnémeti református általános iskola is located in a small village and has 55 pupils. Due to the small number of pupils, the primary school closed over the last few years, but, thanks to the tireless efforts of all those responsible, this could be turned around.

At both schools, there's a great deal of commitment to supporting pupils as best possible and creating a pleasant learning environment for them.  As it isn't always so easy to motivate the pupils and to find the money for books, the Child & Family Foundation, the Hungarian Lyconet Presidents and myWorld Hungary employees organised an "Angle for a Day" campaign.

An unforgettable day

On 30th May 2019, all participants met in the Ujszliováki Primary School. The pupils had prepared a little performance to show off their acting skills.  They also presented Slovakian poems and songs and provided evidence of their excellent language skills.

Following this successful performance, the Lyconet President made a small speech in which he emphasised the importance of learning and motivated the pupils to read more.  The highlight of the event was the moment when the children were presented with gifts: They were beside themselves with joy when they saw the books and, not only that, but t-shirts too.

Afterwards, the the team set off for the Hernádnémeti primary school, where they were met with a warm welcome: The pupils sang a serenade on their arrival and touched the hearts of all present.  These school also received generous book donations which were originally intended for the community library.  As the holidays were just around the corner, they decided that they should present some books to pupils who had worked particularly hard.  Afterwards, the pupils were fed fresh, home-made pancakes.  The children were so happy and truly grateful, they positively shone.  And so a successful day, full of unforgettable experiences, came to an end.

A big thank you to Antal Gergics and his team, who actively supported the "Angel for a Day" campaign.
