A library for the Holy Trinity School

In 2019, head master, Frederick Akhelumele, put his project into action: a school library for Holy Trinity.

Books are a luxury which tend not to feature in the everyday lives of most people in Uromi.  This means that the vast majority of the pupils have barely any access to literature outside of school.  Thus, the school management is keen to get the children and teenagers acquainted with the world of books and to get them excited about reading.

The benefits of a school library

The quality of the lessons should now improve thanks to the school library and the fact that the children now have access to numerous books and school textboooks.  Another advantage is that many parents can save on expensive book purchases for their children and the necessary specialist literature can be provided to each and every child.  Additionally, regular reading has an exceptionally positive influence on the development of language skills and helps the children to acquire knowledge and to broaden their horizons.  Although the "School Library" Project is still in the planning stages, everyone involved is looking forward to having a library at their disposal.  Both Frederick and the pupils can barely wait to say "Welcome to the World of Books!".

A Learner's Paradise

It has been Frederick Akhelumele's vision to give the pupils of the Holy Trinity School the opportunity to discover the world outside the door since he founded the school.  However, it's not just Frederick's dream to provide young Uromis with the symbolic literary key to far-off lands, foreign cultures, new ideas and boundless knowledge.  The parents and teachers were and are very aware of the benefits and opportunities which a school library can provide and, in the past, were keen on the idea of having one built.  However, despite enthusiasm, for a long time, the financial means required for such a project simply weren't available.

Close to the Heart

At the end of last year, the time had finally come.  During the course of our budgeting and evaluatory meetings with Frederick, we managed to find a way, thanks to the generous support from our donors, to include the school library in our budget for 2019.  This was a great success and all involved were thrilled. Frederick and his teachers got to work straight away.  In addition to their everyday tasks, they spent the next few months making preparations which not only involved the search for appropriate classrooms on the school site but also for the right equipment.  During the process, Frederick was keen to make efficient use of the donations received and made huge effort to look for high-quality furniture to purchase at a fair price - a challenge which he overcame with ease.

The Library Takes Shape

September was a very special month for the Holy Trinity School as, following months of preparations, the school library finally opened its doors.  96 chairs, 24 tables and ten book shelves turned a very ordinary room into an inviting Aladdin's cave in which to spend a few quiet hours.  The shelves aren't full of books yet but the cosy backdrop provides the pupils with the perfect place to prepare for their exams or to do their homework.  A library committee already exists and it's their job to further develop the "School Library" project.  So it won't be long before the lovely new room will become the fountain of knowledge which it was planned to be.
